As some of you know I just finshed building my new “Hunter” box and ran into a bit of an issue with the Sapphire Radeon HD4870 (1GB) video card I installed. Right now I am working closely with the guys in QA, engineering, and support over at AMD to see if we can nip this one in the bud.
Problem
On catalyst load DVI fails to respond to signal. A VGA adapter to cable solution works but does not send a digital signal.
Update April 2nd, 2009
The engineers have been able to reproduce my issue and are going to ship me a couple cards to test in my configuration. I will keep you guys updated on the solution when I have it.
Update April 6th, 2009
Installed the 512mb version of the 4870 that the guys over at AMD sent me to test. Intersting note, VGA and DVI connections are now both detected in Catalyst Control Center, but DVI still has “No Signal”.
Update April 13th, 2009
The guys over at AMD have sent me a registry hack that they claim resolves the problem. I am going to go ahead and dump it in and if it works I will let you all know and post the hacks.
Update May 12th, 2009
ATI engineers resolved the problem, they will be pushing a hotfix in the next couple weeks. Be patient guys.

Hi,
I’ve the same issue (no DVI signal) with Sapphire HD4870 (512) and Iiyama E1900S. Iiyama has a workaround for their products. I received a DVI-D cable sent from Iiyama customer support and with that cable I’m getting a digital signal.
This is exactly the cable: http://www.inline-info.de./index.php?six_do=cms&six_art=21907&lang=en
My System:
Asus P5Q3
Intel Q9650
Corsair 4GB DDR3 TW3X4G1333C9DHX
Sapphire HD 4870
OCZ Solid 30GB (2x) raid0 (Vista x64)
WD Raptor 74gb (2X) Raid0 (XP)
Enermax MODU-82+ 625W
Iiyama E2607WS
Iiyama E1900S
thx

I have posted a work around which has solved the problem for me here
http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=96981&STARTPAGE=24&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear&#lastunread
I think this has to do with the CCC defaulting refresh rate to 200hz when many monitors won’t do this.

Thanks guys for the assist I will pass the information on to AMD.
We have tried a couple different cables in my configuration without any resolution. First test card comes in today so we shall see what happens.

Ok AMD has sent me a registry hack. Going to dump in the keys and reboot. If it works i will post it up.

I hope the hack works because i have been working on this problem since July. I have tried every driver since then and it still hasn’t worked so hopefully amd finally fixed this. Even if it is a hack in the registry i don’t care cause i want this to work so bad

Hi Eric
Sounds good. Any hope for XP users as well? Have the exact same problem as the Vista users loosing DVI signal after ATI driver install effective from reboot just before the login screen. I have a Dell 2407fwp, one of the screens reported to not work with the ATI driver.

Right now we are focusing in the Vista issue but I will include your message in my next email to them so they are aware of it. My guess is it will fix both.

So any luck with this, did the reg-hack change anything or are you seeing much the same?

The Reg Hack did not work for me specificly howerver, it was able to resolve the issue in the lab. You are welcome to try it in your system but please backup your registry first and follow up with the results.
try the following:
You’ll need to locate the ATI registry folder which can be determined by opening CCC -> Information Center -> Graphics Software and look at the “2D Driver File Path”.
That should tell you where to create these keys (all keys are DWORD type and their value should be set to 1.):
“GXODFPReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
“GXODFP1ReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
“GXODFP2ReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
“GXODFP3ReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
“GXODFP4ReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
“GXODFP5ReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
“GXODFPEXTReducedBlanking”=DWORD:1
If this fix works with you please follow up with your machine information including video card make and model and OS.

I tried putting those keys into the registry and it did not work for me either. I don’t know what is going on but i think that if someone were to look at a lot of those registry values someone could figure this out.

I sent a screen shot back to the engineers but have not heard yet. When I do I will keep you guys posted.

I am really glad that they finally have a hotfix driver because this problem has been around for a long time. I just hope it works

Any updates?

The hot fix (5/17ish) released a couple weeks ago should address the issue, I ended up having the RMA the monitor back to ASUS, the Video card was registering the monitor; The monitor was not registering the video card. New monitor should be here in a week or so.

Something like this just started happening with my system i have a sapphire HD4879 1GB, and just about a week ago my system keeps loosing the DVI signal just minutes into a game (any game), and it seems that the card overheats because the fan starts running really fast (2 red LEDs on the back of the card light up) I have never overclocked the card,a nd i tried running the game in low settings, but keep having the problem. already installed the catalyst hot fix and the problem still happens. please help i don’t know what to do now

I also happen to have an asus monitor PG221 to be presice, i don’t know if the problem could be on the monitor instead
#17 by Eric Miller on September 9, 2009 - 9:16 am
Miguel it sounds like the issue is the video card. What power supply are you using with it? What temps are you getting? My first thought is to check that you are getting enough juice to the card. If that is the case then it sounds like you might have a bad card (red lights are not good).
Get back to me and I will help where I can.

Well, after one year of no problems it seems I have also hit the wall with the DVI problem…thing is that I have a 4870×2 coupled with a Samsung T240… no fix has worked for us x2 users yet, I was hoping maybe you have some suggestions…
#19 by Eric Miller on September 14, 2009 - 10:31 am
Only thing I can suggest is try the card against a different monitor/DVI port to verify the issue is in the Card. I ended up having to send my monitor in because the port was not functioning properly. Other than that I would get with one of the guys over at ATI Support or with the manufacturer of the card. About the only thing I can suggest.
